What is Flovv?

It’s not just another web based form builder; it’s a form builder with a difference!

Flovv is a form builder that anyone with basic experience in computers and Internet can thrive in without knowing any programming languages.

www.flovv.com is an online multi-page form builder that was released in July 2007. There was a lot of thought, dedication, research and energy put in to this Internet service and we are very proud to release “flovv” to the world.

First let us look at few simple yet important points when talking about a form.

Each one of us would have come in to contact with a form at least a few times in our lifetime; forms are used extensively in our day to day life.

A Form is a method to collect responses from one or more individuals. Forms hold high significance since the information gathered by forms is often of high priority and should contain accurate data.

There were plenty of issues with paper based forms, and paper forms were subjected to a lot of transformation simply because they did not deliver a complete job.

People were looking for a replacement to paper forms for many years, and the Internet age resulted in “online form builders” coming to life. These online form builders were a great solution for many problems that were faced with paper based forms.

Until now online forms remain cost effective, fast and reliable for collecting responses from target audience.

Yet there are few aspects we should consider when creating an online form.

• The person filling the form should not be bored
• The form should serve as a guide to the person filling out the form
• There often is a need to present complicated forms with many input fields in a manner that is least confusing to the person filling it out
• The person filling the form should feel secure about the information he or she enters online

After considering the above aspects we came up with a multi-page online form builder that supports conditional page branching - Flovv

Technology that was used

Flovv services are developed using a combination of some popular open source technologies. It was built on Appfuse using Spring MVC and Hibernate framework. The client side mainly consists of JavaScript. We have used a lot of Ajax, to give the feel of a desktop application to flovv. Here, we used DWR as a framework.

Flovv has a lot of client side functionality. Therefore, to use it you need to have a JavaScript enabled browser. It will also have to be DOM compatible. Currently it is optimized for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 & 7 and Mozilla Firefox 2.0 upwards.

Internet link speeds of 512K or upwards is recommended, although Flovv has been tested for lesser speeds as well.

The Form Editor

We wanted to make the form creation experience exiting too, that’s why built the flovv editor to be very user friendly.

The idea is that users (the persons building the forms) are able to figure out the form creating editor intuitively. We have tried to accomplish this task as much as possible, and would continue to improve the usability of Flovv.
